Hand Tufting Workshop at Studio Herron


Hand tufting is a craft most widely used for rug making, beginning along the coast of New England in the United States as rug hooking.

In this 1 day workshop:

  • Learn a new technical skill with analog tufting and rug hooking tools to make a 3 dimensional art piece.

  • Explore fibrous materials as a textural drawing tool.

  • A short slide lecture will be presented showing historical and contemporary examples of the craft in context.

  • A demonstration with the electric tufting gun will also be shown, you can try it out!

  • Finishing techniques including how to adhere and back your piece will be discussed with a demo.

  • Local catered lunch will be provided for everyone. (Please indicate your menu preference on the form at checkout.)

The workshop will take place at Studio Herron in Chicago, yarn and rug hooking/tufting tool and other materials will be provided for you to keep. Studio Herron is located in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood near the Blue Line Damen El stop. The studio address will be emailed to each person with other class details after registration.
