Session I: Experimental Basketry, Sculptural Form JANUARY
In this class, we’ll learn and apply basket weaving techniques to making 3-dimensional sculptural forms, structures, and vessels. On the first day, we will start with a few group dye baths to apply color to our materials and move on to making sampler pieces to learn the techniques and basics of weaving 3-dimensionally. Day two we will explore form and structure, look at sculptural basket work from a historical and contemporary lens, and begin making small-scale projects. The following weekend we will discuss and learn techniques for breaking the round and getting more sculptural, exploring the memory and flexibility of our material and its possibilities. Emphasis is on learning basic basketry techniques and using them experimentally to build sculptures. Bring your wild ideas and creative brain. No previous experience is necessary
*Tools and materials will be supplied and a booklet on techniques made by the artist
*Catered lunch and snacks will be provided.
*Dates: This class takes place over two weekends, January 11 + 12, 18 + 19 11am-4pm
